Street Food Vendors… Don’t say this to a Health Inspector!
The thing we all dread the most when getting started in street food vending, hot dogs, or whatever, is that first call to the county or city health department.
What you have to remember is that they work for us.
We pay taxes so they can help us start our food businesses and keep them going. It’s also their job to protect the public from bad food.
You don’t have to be cocky when you call them up, in fact, that’s one thing you shouldn’t do, for sure.
But here are some things to say, and not say when you talk to an inspector!
In this video – The Health Inspector:
- (1:50) Inspectors aren’t gonna be excited to talk to you. Not usually.
- Why? Because more vendors means more work for them.
- Some of them are just plain negative Nellies
- A case study from Raleigh, NC, worst ever
- “Too hard to run a hot dog cart.”
- “You won’t make money at it!”
- How I stumped her… Yer gonna love this one..
- (6:20) Don’t say this to a Health Inspector (what not to say)
- “I’m gonna have 800 carts on the street in less than a month!”
- Downplay your plans.
- “I’m just gonna be part time…”
- “Maybe do some birthday parties and stuff…”
- This keeps you under the radar…. They won’t see you as a threat, or more work for them.
- Less is More! Say as little as possible. The more you talk, the more nervous they’ll get.
- 8:30) When they ask, “What are you Gonna Serve?”
- Keep it simple!
- “Just hot dogs.”
- “Few condiments…”
- NOT, “Look at my menu! It’s 85 pages long!”
- Again, the less you say, the better
- Add stuff to the menu later. It’s way easier once you have the license.

- Ask them where to find a commissary.
- If they say they can’t tell you, they can. It’s public information.
- (10:30) Can You Show Me the Code for That?
- If they give you some b.s. about something you must hase, or can’t have or do, just ask them, politely, to direct you to the code in the law.
- Most of the time, they can’t because they’re just making it up.
- Case Study: Atlanta, GA and the Mosquito Net Caper
- Ask them where to find a commissary.
