I'm starting out, what condiments should a get for my first day? There are tons of condiments you can offer on a hot dog cart.

We have vendors offering all kinds of stuff: hot sauces, pulled pork, 16 different mustards, you name it.

“But Ben, what should I offer?”

Keep it simple.

Ketchup, mustard, mayonaise are the three most common.

Don’t buy 10 gallons of jalapeños like me!

Start with your health department. Make sure you can offer them before buying them.

Some states you can’t have chili unless it’s meatless. Yep, there is such a thing…

What about cheese?

Health dept told me no cheese….

So I used Cheese Wiz!

1% cheese, 99% wiz…

What about all the other options?

Depends on your area and customers.

Don’t introduce new stuff until you get going and know what you’re doing.

Salad on a hot dog??

Yep, some areas love it…

Just give them what they want.

Stick to the basics…

Based on your customers and your area.

Your opinion doesn’t matter. You’re not selling hot dogs to yourself, I hope.

Whatever you do, don’t overdo it, and don’t over buy. Especially jalapeños.

Sure you can have specialty dogs with all kinds of exotic stuff on them.

But start with the basics, man.

“Just give me mine with mustard and onions!”
