Howdy! Today, I want to dive into some hot dog vendor catering tips, especially when it comes to handling private gigs.
With the Fourth of July and other special events right around the corner, you might find yourself getting more invites for catering.
But how do you handle these opportunities without stressing out?
Let's break it down!
Preparing for Private Gigs
Have a Deep Freezer
One of the most common emails I get is from vendors panicking about their supplies just before a big event.
If you’re a member of Vendors United, you probably already know what to do.
If you want to take your vending business to the next level, go and get together with the best vendors on the planet inside the Vendors United community.

If not, don’t worry!
The key is to have a deep freezer.
Once you can afford to store some food and supplies, you won’t ever have to worry about one-off deals where someone calls you for a big event.
Imagine you get a call for a huge ballroom auction, and they want you to cater on July 4th for 1,500 meals.
If you’ve got your supplies ready, you’re golden.
Some events might require fewer meals, like 300, but even at $15 a meal, that’s good money!
Plan Ahead
When I started vending, I had zero money to store supplies.
I also didn’t know about these opportunities, and they didn’t come often.
But once you start vending regularly, people will start reaching out to you for events.
They remember that hot dog they had from you months ago and want you for their special event.

Stock Up
It’s a nightmare when you get a great opportunity but don’t have the supplies.
That’s why I recommend always keeping a stockpile. Here’s how to do it:
- Get a Deep Freezer: These are cheap and can be bought on Craigslist, eBay, or Amazon.
- Stock Hot Dogs: Keep a couple of cases, or even three or four. Most cases have 80 hot dogs.
- Supplies: Freeze your chili if you make it yourself. Keep number 10 cans of chili from Costco or Sam’s Club. You can always enhance them later.
Financial Planning
Do not stress yourself out if you can’t afford all the supplies at once.
Start small.
Within a week or two of vending, you should be able to afford more.
Always keep some extra supplies as a backup.
This way, you’ll always be ready for any opportunity that comes your way.
Why Stockpiling Matters
Having supplies ready isn’t just about being prepared; it’s about seizing opportunities.

The more prepared you are, the more gigs you can take on without scrambling at the last minute.
Here are some scenarios to consider:
- Emergency Gigs: Last-minute events can be stressful, but not if you’re prepared.
- Special Requests: Maybe a customer loved your hot dogs and wants you for a private party.
- High Demand Events: Events like the Fourth of July where you can make a significant profit.

The Bottom Line
By planning ahead and stocking up, you ensure that you can handle any catering opportunity that comes your way.
It might seem like an upfront investment, but the returns can be tremendous.
