Well, after my 70-TEENTH time answering the same dang hot dog vendor questions today, I figured I’d share this little rant with you.
I get it—you’re excited about starting a hot dog vending business, you’ve got questions, and you want answers yesterday by noon.
But here’s the deal: I’ve made videos, articles, free guides, and even cheat sheets because I can’t answer every single email in real-time.
So when folks shoot me an email asking me to basically do all their work for them, I get a little spicy.
And I figured, why not turn this frustration into something useful for all y’all?
Vendor Questions That Drive Me Up the Wall

Let me paint you a picture.
It’s 6 PM, I’ve been working all day, maybe got a cigarette hanging out of my mouth, I’m tired, and I open my inbox to find a message that goes like this:
“Hey Ben, I’m looking to buy a hot dog cart. I live in Ohio.
Can you confirm which one will be approved?
Also, can I tow it with my car?
Oh, and can I grill hot dogs on the grill?”
Now, I love you.
Really, I do.
But come on, folks… all of this is covered in my free training.
Like, literally step by step.
For free.
No hoops, no “gimme your email first,” just go to learnhotdogs.com/start.
But instead of looking, people want me to email the health inspector for them, confirm state codes, and basically hold their hands through every little thing.
That ain’t how this works.
Why You Gotta Do the Work Yourself

Here’s why I won’t just “confirm it” for you: because health inspectors don’t all say the same dang thing.
One vendor in Georgia was told by their inspector they needed mosquito netting around the cart.
Mosquito netting!
Not in the code, totally made-up nonsense.
But if you don’t know how to check, you’d just believe it.
That’s why I teach hot dog vendors to get schematics, send them directly to their inspector, and get pre-approval before spending a dime.
Do it right and you’re golden.
Skip the steps and you’re in for a world of frustration.
I even wrote a whole article on this called learnhotdogs.com/liar.
Bookmark it—you’ll thank me later.
Hot Dog Vendor Reality Check
Let’s answer Sasha’s questions real quick:
- Can a car tow the cart? Yep. A smart car, a motorcycle, whatever. I’ve got vendors pulling carts up hills in Alaska with no problem.
- Can you grill hot dogs on the grill? It’s a grill. Of course you can.
You can grill onions, hot dogs, potatoes, shrimp—heck, you can grill a Diet Pepsi can if you want (not that I’d recommend it).
The question isn’t whether the grill works—it’s whether your state code allows it.
And here’s the truth bomb: every state is different, and sometimes it depends on the mood of your health inspector.
Which is why YOU have to learn how to ask the right questions and show the right paperwork.

Why This Business is Still the Best

Listen, I may rant, but it’s because I know how dang good this business is when you do it right.
Street food vending has given me more freedom than I ever dreamed of.
I get to:
- Pick my own hours.
- Never ask a boss for permission to go fishing or to a soccer game.
- Make good money in short hours.
- Tell the boss (if I had one) to kiss my rear end.
It ain’t for everybody—it’s work, no doubt.
But when you do it right, when you stop looking for shortcuts and just follow the steps, it works.
Always has, always will.
